If you’ve ever dealt with glass breakage or internal stress during annealing, you know the frustration. It usually comes down to one thing: your temperature control isn’t reacting fast enough. That’s why we lean on fast-response infrared (IR) lamps. They cut out the waiting game you get with old-school convection ovens.
No more waiting for the air to warm up
Here is the thing about traditional heaters: they have to heat the air first, and then the air heats the glass. In a fast-moving production line, that lag is a nightmare. It’s just too slow. IR lamps work differently. They shoot electromagnetic radiation straight into the glass. It’s almost instant. You can tweak the heat profile on the fly as the glass glides through the tunnel, which gives you a level of control that feels way more intuitive.
The secret is in the quartz sleeve
The quartz sleeve is where the real magic happens. We use high-purity fused quartz because it can take a beating. It handles extreme thermal shock without cracking, which is exactly what you need in this environment. More importantly, it lets that shortwave IR radiation pass right through. The heat goes exactly where it belongs—into the glass—instead of soaking into the lamp housing. One quick tip:**keep these sleeves spotless.**A little bit of dust or a few fingerprints can create hot spots. If that happens, your lamps will burn out way sooner than they should.
Making your floor space work for you
When you make the switch to IR, you’ll notice you don’t need a massive annealing lehr taking up half your factory. Since the heat transfer is direct, you don’t need those giant chambers to get the glass to the right soak temperature. It frees up a lot of room. But a word of caution: high-density IR arrays get incredibly hot at the lamp heads. You’ve got to get your cooling right. Whether you use fans or water-cooling jackets, don’t skim here. If the ends overheat, your filaments will snap. We usually suggest a quick check on the quartz sleeves every 500 hours. It only takes a moment, but it keeps your heat distribution steady and your production line humming.
