
Getting the Balance Right: Silk-Screening and Tempering
Here is the struggle when you’re combining silk-screen printing with tempering: you’re fighting a constant battle with heat. You need it hot enough to bake the ink, but if you push it too far, the glass warps or the pattern starts to bleed. It’s a tightrope walk. To fix this, we use shortwave infrared (IR) heating lamps. Think of them as a precision tool. They hit the ink layer fast and hard, curing it quickly before the glass even touches the main tempering furnace. Keeping the lines sharp It all comes down to how much energy you’re hitting the glass with. If the lamps are too hot or stay on too long, the ink basically cooks itself. You’ll end up with blurred edges or weird colors that just don’t look right. We set these lamps to give a concentrated burst of energy. It hits the surface ink immediately. By tweaking the wattage and the distance from the glass, you get a cured pattern without heating the rest of the glass to the point where it starts to deform. The stress problem This is where it gets a bit tricky. When you heat up just the printed area, you create a temperature gap between the ink and the clear glass. If that gap is too wide, the glass can freak out, leading to permanent stress fractures. The trick is tuning the IR wavelength to match the ink. This keeps the heat locked into the pattern, rather than letting it soak into the glass. The trade-offs If you’re running a high-volume line, you’ll want high-wattage IR tubes because they’re fast. Really fast. But that comes with a price. High heat density puts a massive strain on your power supply and makes the whole area sweat. You’ve got to be aggressive with your cooling fans and venting. If those lamp housings overheat, you’re just inviting a premature burnout, and nobody wants to stop production to swap out dead lamps. Also, keep an eye on your voltage. If it flickers, your curing becomes uneven across the sheet, and that’s a headache you don’t need.
