
Getting Your Curing Curves Right with Zoned IR
Ever tried to get a perfect finish on car rims only to find the edges are burnt and the center is still tacky? It happens. When you’re running long automatic spray lines, a single heat setting just doesn’t cut it. You end up fighting the equipment instead of trusting it. We handle this by splitting the heat up. Instead of one giant, blunt instrument of an oven, we use zoned temperature control with short-wave infrared lamps.
How the Zoned Setup Actually Works
Think of it as breaking the curing tunnel into a few independent neighborhoods. Each zone has its own IR lamps and PID controllers. This means you can actually dial in the heat for exactly what’s happening at that moment. You can set one area for pre-heating, another for the flash-off, and a final stretch for the cross-linking. You just look at the technical data sheet for your coating and map out the heat density by tweaking the wattage and how the lamps are spaced. It’s a lot more intuitive.
The Gear You’ll Need
We usually go with quartz halogen tubes. The reason is simple: short-wave radiation doesn’t just sit on the surface. It punches through the coating and hits the metal substrate, driving the heat from the inside out. This is huge because it stops “skinning”—that annoying thing where the top hardens too fast and traps solvents underneath. One heads-up: don’t skimp on your power supply. If you’re running 2kW+ lamps across ten different zones, your electrical panel is going to feel the strain. Make sure your wiring can handle the peak current. If you get voltage drops, your temperatures will drift, and you’re right back to square one.
The Trade-offs
Here is the catch. High-wattage IR lamps are fast. Really fast. But they put off a massive amount of ambient heat. If your conveyor slows down, those rims can overheat in a heartbeat. You have to find the sweet spot between lamp intensity, conveyor timing, and maybe some forced-air cooling. If you miss that balance, you’ll start seeing bubbles in the paint. But once you nail it? You save a ton of floor space compared to those old-school convection ovens. You get the parts out the door faster, and the finish looks exactly how it should.
