
Stop the Skinning: A Better Way to Cure Metal Coatings
Ever get those annoying bubbles or pinholes in your finish? It usually happens because of how standard IR lamps work. They hit the surface first, baking a hard “skin” or crust on top before the rest of the coating is ready. The problem is that the solvents and gases trapped underneath have nowhere to go. They get stuck. When they finally force their way out, they ruin your adhesion and leave your parts looking like Swiss cheese. We handle this by flipping the script. Instead of heating from the outside in, we use lamps—built to Heraeus specs—that cure from theinside out.
How it actually works
Most ovens just blast the surface. Our approach shifts where the heat goes. By tuning the wavelength or placing the IR source internally, we heat the metal base and the bottom layer of the coating first. The heat travels upward, toward the surface. This keeps the top layer “open” and breathable for longer. Those solvents can evaporate naturally and freely before the surface finally seals up. No traps, no bubbles. Just a clean finish.
The nitty-gritty (and what to watch out for)
These lamps are designed as drop-in replacements for your current oven racks, so you don’t have to rebuild your whole line. We use high-purity quartz glass because it can handle the stress of rapid heating and cooling without cracking. But here’s the thing: you have to keep an eye on your power density. A high-wattage shortwave lamp is incredibly fast, but if you crank the power without speeding up your conveyor, you’ll scorch the edges of your parts. You’ll also want to tweak your PID controllers. If the ramp-up is too aggressive, you’ll overshoot your target temperature and end up with a mess.
Keeping things running
We use standard industrial connectors, so swapping a lamp during downtime is a quick, painless job. Once they’re in, just remember to check your reflectors every six months. Dust is the enemy here. When reflectors get dirty, your efficiency plummets, forcing the lamps to run hotter just to do the same job. Clean reflectors mean you draw less power and your lamps last way longer. And for heaven’s sake, keep your cooling fans clear. If the airflow is blocked, the ends of the lamps will burn out way before they should.
