
How to Get the Gloss Right Without Burning Your Finish
Trying to get solvents out of a metal coating is always a bit of a tightrope walk. You want them gone, but if you push too hard, you end up scorching the surface or killing that deep, mirror-like gloss. It all comes down to how you handle the heat. That’s why we lean on short-wave infrared (SWIR) lamps. Instead of baking the top layer into a hard skin—which just traps the solvents underneath—SWIR dives straight through the coating. It pushes the solvents out from the bottom up. It’s a much cleaner way to do it.
Saving Energy Where It Counts
If you want to keep your power bill down, you have to make sure your lamp is actually “talking” to the solvent. You want the emission peak to line up with the solvent’s absorption band. The beauty of short-wave IR is that it’s intense but concentrated. You aren’t wasting energy heating up the air in the room; you’re putting that heat exactly where it needs to go: the workpiece. I usually suggest quartz-halogen tubes with specific coatings. Why? Because some of those high-end metallic finishes are sensitive to UV light. A coated tube shifts the spectrum, so you get all the heat you need without the photonic damage that dulls your shine.
The Danger of “Orange Peel”
High-wattage tubes are great because they get up to temperature fast, which keeps your line moving. But be careful. If the surface temperature spikes too quickly, you’ll get “solvent popping” or that dreaded “orange peel” texture. It looks amateur and it’s a pain to fix. To avoid this, don’t just slam the power on. Set your PID controllers to ramp up the heat gradually. Give the coating a chance to breathe. Also, a quick tip on the electrical side: if you’re running 230V or 400V systems, double-check your wiring. If your connections are loose, you get voltage drops. Your lamps won’t hit the right temp, and you’ll end up slowing down your line just to get the part cured. It’s a waste of time and money.
Getting it Right on the Shop Floor
When you’re actually installing these in the oven, spacing is everything. Keep the lamps exactly the same distance from the metal. If one side is closer than the other, you’ll get hot spots, and there goes your gloss. And please, use a high-quality reflector. You want every single watt bouncing back onto the part. It makes the whole process more efficient and means you don’t have to crank the heat to dangerous levels just to hit your curing threshold.
