
Getting PTFE Coatings to Actually Stick
If you’ve ever dealt with PTFE (Teflon) coatings, you know the nightmare of “skinning.” It happens when you heat the surface too fast. The top layer hardens, traps the solvents underneath, and then—boom—you’ve got bubbles or the whole thing just peels off. It’s frustrating and wastes a lot of money. We fix this using medium-wave infrared (MWIR) lamps. Think of it this way: short-wave lamps hit the surface like a hammer. They’re fast, but they don’t go deep. Medium-wave is different. It actually sinks into the coating.
Why the wavelength matters
We set these lamps to run between 2.0 and 4.0 microns. Why? Because that’s the “sweet spot” for industrial polymers. Instead of just scorching the top, the heat travels all the way down to where the coating meets the metal. Everything heats up together. No trapped gas, no peeling. Just a solid, deep cure.
No “one size fits all” here
We don’t just hand you a standard wattage and wish you luck. That doesn’t work in the real world. We tweak the power based on how fast your conveyor is moving and the actual shape of your parts. Sure, cranking up the wattage lets you run the line faster, but it’s hard on the equipment. To keep the tubes from bowing or burning out under that kind of pressure, we use heavy-wall quartz. It’s tougher. It lasts longer.
The tricky parts
Getting these into your current oven is pretty simple, but the heat is intense. You’ll want polished aluminum or gold-coated reflectors to make sure that energy actually hits the part instead of just heating up the room. But here’s the thing: don’t just chase speed. If you push the power too hard, you risk creating “hot spots,” especially on thin metal parts. You can end up scorching the PTFE. You have to find the right balance between the lamp distance and the pulse cycle. And one last tip: check your cooling fans. If they aren’t beefy enough to handle the ambient heat these lamps kick off, your control electronics will start to drift, and your precision goes right out the window.
